Here is our 'knee to knee' discussion in action. Term 4 was fast upon us and I thought it was time for some changes in the classroom. I realised that perhaps I was not representing the Maori culture in the classroom as much as i should and therefore made it my goal to embrace the culture even though i am still new to it myself. I have implemented some interactive window displays and more labelling. i have also updated the 5 star writing as I thought it was time for the children to move on as they are all neat writers now so we have swapped the neat writing star for spelling. i have also updated the writing display and after discussing with the children we decided to add more interesting words that we can use in our stories and the prompts to help us improve our writing. I have also moved the chairs and tables around as I think students, especially 5 year olds get bored with the same environment. Since I have implemented the activites I have noticed a big improvement in the children's oral language. They are now coming up with good questions and answers during class and group discussion. The children have gained in confidence and are more willing to 'give it a go' without fear of making a mistake.
i have to admit I was reluctant at first to implement yet more activites into an already packed curriculum but most of the activites only take a few moments, they have become part of our daily routine now and neither myself or the students have noticed it impacting on our other leqarning. oral language in the classroom is ongoing and therefore i am always looking for new ideas and activites to develop the children's language further and keep them on their toes. I also have a strong support network within the school and from outside agencies, a shout out to Erica Locke who had advised and guided me throughout this whole process. What a nice surprise to be presented with a huge bunch of flowers during a swimming lesson. Was it my birthday, no, my anniversary, no, an argument with my hubby, no, a parent and student had nominated me for teacher of the year. Considering I'm a BT this was a great honour and surprise. I din't win the vote but it was nice to be acknowledged. In Room 25 the children are very involved in their learning. They have independent actvities, interactive displays and fun learning. Below are a few things e get up to. It is important to me that my students have a say in their learning. So at the begining of each term I ask the children what they would like to do that term and they write down some ideas. We then all conference together and find out why they have chosen those ideas, are they achievable, practical and can we carry out those activites. The children also choose one goal they would like to achive that term., we record it then at the end of the term we check to see if they have met their goal. My students are now begining to edit their own work and co-construct their learning goals. Below are some photographs of all this in action. |
