As part of my inquiry I want to introduce more oral language activities in my classroom. I have looked at my planning and weekly timetable to make some amendments. Monday is on minute news, Tuesday is compliment circle, and Friday is news discussion. here are some of the children discussing interesting pictures from newsagents. As the weeks progress I hope the children will become more confident with speaking and will look at the pictures in more depth.

This was another way of picking our goals for next week. The children read the chart in accordance with their level of reading book to pick a learning goal. The children worked together in their reading groups to choose their learning goals. They worked well together to come up with one that they all agreed on. As part of my inquiry I want to develop more oral language in the classroom. I have looked at my weekly timetable and changed a few things around to fit oral language activities in my weekly plan. Monday will be two minute news, Tuesday will be compliment circle and Friday is newspaper/news discussion. here are a few videos of the children's first attempt at looking at an interesting picture from the newspaper and discussing it . I hope in a few weeks time their confidence and oral language will develop greatly. Erica, came in to show me how to implement 'stay and stray'. This is another strategy to implement oral language into the classroom.
The way it works is at the end of an activity such as writing, you pick about 3 children (one from each group) to wander around the desks looking at everyone's work, they then have to say who they think has done the best work and why. The rest of the class stay where they are. Reflection: I wondered how long this was going to take and how the children would react. I thought it would take a while and that the children would perhaps just pick their friends work. However i was proved very wrong, it only took a few minutes and the children were very mature about it. for example child B said "I choose child I's work because he has written from the margin and this was his writing goal" this was true because I had been trying to get child 'I' to write from the margin for ages. Here are some pictures of it in action. This is another strategy to use when implementing more oral language into the classroom. Erica from RTLB came into my classroom to show me how it works. At the end of an activity such as writing 3 children are chosen to be the 'strays' the rest of the class will 'stay' in their seats. The stray will go around the tables and pick the work that they think is the best and say why.
Reflection: I thought this activity would take too long as 5 year olds do everything at their pace, I also thought that they would actually pick their friends as the best. How wrong I was. it only took a few minutes and the stray's were very mature about it, child 'B' chose child 'I' and when asked why he said because he has started all his writing at the margin (something I have been trying to do for weeks!) and that was his target goal!". This is something I will be implementing into my classroom from now on. Below is a few photographs of it in action. |
